Foo Fighters - Lyric analysis

Foo Fighters - 'Times Like These'

Times like these is the fourth track on Foo Fighters fourth album titled 'One by One' which was released in 2002. A solo acoustic version performed by frontman Dave Grohl was also released after the popularity of the original had died down. The lyrics and style of the song are partly taken from the bands own personal inspiration.

The lyrics themselves can be taken in a number of ways, i personally see it as making mistakes but learning from them and moving on with a new outlook. however i think there may be a deeper meaning. The song mentions love a lot, and more importantly not knowing where it is headed "Im a little divided, should i stay or run away"

I think that the chorus could also suggest that he has been hurt by the person in his previous relationship, and has realised that it wasnt love at all as it says "learn to love again" - possibly saying that he didnt know what it was before.

First day of filming

We started filming the first shots of our music video on the 23rd. We had originally planned to film some of the 'live' shots on the saturday as we had to start later in the day, and if filming outside we wanted the lighting and weather to be good. We were also going to film all day on sunday however the person who we had used for the filming on the previous day was unavailable on the sunday.

In the location that we filmed in we found ourselves slightly unprepared. We had to type up some of the lyrics in large so that Jon (Our actor) could read them whilst playing the guitar. We set the camera and tripod up straight away and after some time got the lighting how we wanted it. However the location that we filmed in was dark and untidy. I took my camera along to take photos of the locations and i will post these later on. i also took a short video on my camera of some setting up but i am unsure of whether it stored to my camera.

Filming Plans

We plan to do a majority of the filming this coming weekend.
The weather is supposed to be clear, on both days, but we plan to separate the indoor filming on one day and do the outside shots on the next.

We will film the inside shots on the saturday as we are only all available after 3 O Clock and it will probably start to get dark at around half four. There are a number of shots that we have panned to do inside.

I will also be taking my camera to take some shots of the locations.

Song Permission

A while back Alex emailed xlrecordings asking for permission to use Frank Turner's song "Photosynthesis" from the album Love, Ire & Song.
However we have not received a reply from them, we cannot hold off any longer to film the video so we will have to continue to create the storyboards etc with this song in mind

Filming Plans & Storyboarding

The draft filming will all be completed by the 29th of January. We plan to film on the coming weekends, mostly the 23rd and 24th.

Before we can film we needed to make a storyboard with the timings of each shot, we started this in todays lesson and have come up with some of the shots as well as locations, and all of the timing.

Lyric Analysis

This is a short analysis of the lyrics to the song "the real damage" by Frank Turner, which are in the previous post.

The song itself is a 1st person narrative, talking about the morning after a drunken night. The lyrics suggest that he is disorientated, and barely able to remember what day it is. The chorus gives the impression that the life he is leading is leaving him friendless or that his drinking drives away the ones he cares about - "I started the night with all my friends and Iended up alone. I started out so happy now I'm hungover and down." This would be an important aspect to look into if we were to do the project on this song.

The verses show a slow progression through the day, the actions suggest that he is struggling to re adjust - "Squinting in thesadly sobering sunshine of the Sunday morninglight."
"Longing for a shower, and for clean sheets, and a charger for my phone."
By the end of the song he realises that he has infact partied for a day longer than he thought, and it is infact a monday rather than sunday leaving him in a predicament as he will have to face work "hungover and down"
